I am on maternity leave and unable to take clients at this time. As a small child I was fascinated by the big bellies of pregnant women around me, and even more excited about the babies that grew from them; I couldn't wait to grow up and be a mother. As the firstborn in a large family, and the eldest girl in our tightly-knit community, caring for other children came naturally to me, beginning at a young age. My love for this kind of work only grew: during college and for many years after I was a nanny and a preschool teacher. In 2004 I became a prenatal and postpartum yoga teacher. The seeds of interest in childbirth that had been planted so long ago began to take root and grow. In 2004 I received postpartum doula training at Seattle Midwifery School, and in the following year, trained there to be a birth doula. I wanted to dedicate myself to offering continuity of care for families, through all stages: before, during, and after a birth. As a birth doula, I offer assistance in the months leading up to the birth, by listening sensitively to any concerns, requests, hopes and dreams the mother has. I will work with her to create a birthing plan and will be an advocate for her, helping her wishes to be honored as much as possible. During her labor and delivery, I am a calm presence, giving support to a birthing mother by helping her remain grounded, focused, and as comfortable as she can be. My intention is to help her have the most satisfying birthing experience that she possibly can. As a postpartum doula, I offer support and encouragement for the mother and her partner as they begin/continue their journey through parenthood. Of primary importance is being attentive to the mother's health and well-being, and providing assistance with breastfeeding and newborn care. I will listen sensitively to both partners, provide care for siblings, and help with household tasks, errands, and/or organization to facilitate a smooth transition. Thus I can encourage a peaceful, nurturing environment in which all members of the family can bond with the new baby. I consider it an honor and a privilege to accompany a family on this part of their journey, as they welcome a new life into the world. Other passions in my life include spending time with my beloved husband, family and friends, practicing and teaching yoga, climbing mountains (and other outdoor adventures), photography (weddings, babies, families), children's books, and pursuing peace inside and out. Please feel free to contact me at mara.benedict@gmail.com. Look forward to meeting you! |
